Annual Mickey’s 5K Race

The race is being called Mickey’s 5K, in honor of Mickey Boutilier, the founder of Maine Special Olympics and a driving force in the Special Olympics movement from its start in Chicago in 1968. Mickey Boutilier died in 2012 but his legacy as a supporter of all those with intellectual disabilities lives on.

The money raised during this event will be used to support the ongoing programs conducted by the Penobscot/ Piscataquis/Hancock County Area Special Olympics program. These events include sporting events, and social functions. Money raised will also be used to purchase necessary sports equipment for the athletes and to provide scholarships so area athletes can attend State, National, and World Special Olympics Games competitions.

Penobscot/ Piscataquis/Hancock Area Special Olympics is a division of Special Olympics Maine and provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving participants continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. Your support through fundraising events like the Mickey’s 5K is greatly appreciated!
